What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is Apple's flavour of HEIF, the container format it switched to with iOS 11 in 2017. It leans on HEVC compression, which is why a HEIC photo is roughly half the size of the same shot saved as JPEG without looking any worse. One HEIC file can also hold several frames at once — that's how burst shots and Live Photos are stored.
How do I open a HEIC file?
Anything made by Apple opens it natively — Photos and Preview on macOS, and every iPhone since iOS 11. Recent versions of Android read HEIC too. Windows 11 handles it once the HEIF Image Extensions package is installed from the Microsoft Store; on older Windows builds, free viewers such as XnView MP or IrfanView will do the job.
Where HEIC still trips people up is everywhere else: older photo editors, print shops, web upload forms and plenty of Android apps simply reject it. Converting to JPG is usually faster than fighting the software.
What is a JPG file?
JPG (or JPEG) has been the default way to store a photograph since 1992. It throws away detail the eye is least likely to miss, which keeps files small enough to email, upload and embed on a page. It isn't the most efficient codec available today, but it is the one every device, browser and printer made in the last thirty years understands.
How do I open a JPG file?
Double-click it. Every operating system ships with a viewer that handles JPG, every browser renders it, and every image editor imports it. That universality is the whole reason for converting HEIC in the first place — a JPG will still open on a machine that has never heard of Apple.
